As well as a range of seminars (which you don't need to book and are first come first served with space for 150 in each seminar) we are offering two additional opportunities to find out more about careers in live events and creative roles in broadcasting. There are only 50 tickets for each of these events so you will need to sign up in advance. Please only book these tickets if you know you will definitely be attending as we expect them to be popular.


For those taking part in the BBC Academy session there will be lunch provided in the room as this session takes place over lunchtime (we will ask you at sign up about your preferences.)

10.45 - 11.30: room KO12 Theatre: Apprenticeships at the BBC

Simon Broad, Head of Operations in the New Talent team at the BBC Academy will offer an overview of apprenticeship opportunities at the BBC – focussing on production and engineering. What do we look for? How does recruitment work? And what should I expect from the scheme?

Followed directly afterwards by

Apprentices – is this right thing for me?”

Martina Porter from Springboard Media will give a summary of the role of an apprentice and what they can expect during an apprenticeship. She will also look at key characteristics expected from apprentices and how these can help build a successful career. (150 places, no advance booking necessary)


11.30 - 12.15: session room K104: Is a career in live events the right career for you?

Come along and meet Davie Bell who started his career in entertainment at Sheffield University where he spent 11 years as Technical Manager for Sheffield University Students Union. Davie was responsible for the smooth running of 5 busy venues staging everything from live entertainment to conferences. This role crucially included the overseeing of training and development of student volunteers. Under his guidance many of these volunteers have built their own careers in the entertainment industry. Via a number of other entertainment companies Davie later joined Stage Electrics where he has been for 15 years. Davie is hugely experienced commercially and technically and is held in high regard by colleagues and customers alike. (50 places only, please book separately)



11.45 -12.30: room KO12 Theatre: Careers & routes into the film & TV industries

Graham Russ, Schools and Careers Co-ordinator from Creative Skillset, will be talking about the current trends, entry and progression advice for a career in the creative industries; from Film and TV to Animation, Games, Fashion and Digital Advertising. Jo Welch, Diversity and Inclusion Manager at Creative Skillset, will be presenting a short section on improving diversity and access within the creative industries. 12.30 - 13.15: room K105: BBC Academy - Creative Pitching session

Simon Broad, Head of Operations in the New Talent team at the BBC Academy and Martina Porter from Springboard Media will be running an interactive workshop for those interested in creative roles in broadcasting. If you have bags of ideas, are passionate about making programmes and want to get a feel for the creative pitching and commissioning process, join Simon and Martina for this energetic session that will guarantee to get you thinking about audiences, talent and formats. (50 places only, please book separately)



13.15 - 14.00: room KO12: Theatre: Safeguarding young people entering the industry

BECTU research officer, Tony Lennon, will chair a seminar/panel discussion looking at safeguarding young people entering into the industry andworking out if you’re actually following the correct career path for you within the industry.

Panelists are: Arit Eminue, Founder Director, DiVA -Diversity in the Visual Arts and Alison Surtees, Learning Organiser, BECTU. (150 places, no advance booking necessary)



13.30 - 14.15: room K104: Certified UK - Multi medium platform online broadcaster.
Nick Asiama is the the founder & director of Certified UK. Certified UK is a multi medium platform and online broadcaster giving a platform to rising UK talent across a spectrum of art forms. Established since 2010 Certified UK has been delivering interviews & performance pieces with some of the most anticipated names including Shakka, George The Poet, and Little Simz. With their many different medium including filming, online print & journalism, radio & events Nick & the company highlight the best in the next generation of UK talent in every entertaining way possible. You have the opportunity to find out how Nick set up his company and to pick the brain of this entrepreneurial young talent.


14.15 - 15.00: room KO12 Theatre: Careers and routes into Theatre & Live events

Find out from Catherine Large, Deputy CEO of Creative & Cultural Skills about careers in the creative and cultural industries from careers advice to website resources that can help and encourage you to think about available training options. Chris Nicholls, Operations Manager from White Light Ltd, Stuart Graham, Assistant Head of Technical Services, The Ambassador Theatre Group and Robin Townley, CEO of the Association of British Theatre Technicians will talk specifically about jobs in their areas and what a technician career looks like and will encourage you to think about a career working in this rewarding sector. (150 places, no advance booking necessary)



The marketplace will be open all day if you want to just drop in (as long as you signed up in advance) come along and talk to our experts from theatre, live events, film and TV.


Lunch will be available as well as tea, coffee and water.
